HMNH Special Event

Join us for a live glimpse of the biological diversity of previously unexplored areas in the deep sea off California. The museum will host a live Q&A with Peter R. Girguis, Harvard Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, who is working with an international team aboard the E/V Nautilus. The live Q&A will be on Thursday June 30th at 2 PM from Haller Hall at the Harvard Museum of Natural History at 26 Oxford Street. You’ll see the ocean floor via deep-diving robotic cameras. The rover has been working down as deep at 3800 feet, observing the region around the Goleta landslide.

Audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions of Peter Girguis in a conversation moderated by Heather Olins of the Girguis Lab at Harvard, whose doctoral thesis was on microbial eco-physiology at hydrothermal vents. The event is free and open to the public, but do plan to visit the museum before or afterwards to explore the new exhibition, Marine Life in the Putnam Family Gallery. Museum admission $12 adults; $10 students, $8 youth (3-18); free for Harvard ID-holder and one guest.

The research team is looking at the natural resources off the coast as well as its ecology using unmanned, remotely operated underwater vehicles for collecting imagery and samples from the deep sea.

About the research vessel:   The team is onboard the E/V Nautilus owned by the not-for-profit Ocean Exploration Trust.  The ship operates two remote-operated vehicles (ROVs or robot subs that can dive and work underwater).  ROV Hercules is the “yellow” submarine that works on the bottom and ROV Argus watches the ROV Hercules from above.  They are diving to multiple depths ranging from 200 to 3,800 meters.  For more on the expedition, see http://www.nautiluslive.org/video/2016/06/22/expedition-overview-central-california-60-seconds
