Commonalities of Success in Clean Energy Technology Innovation in Latin America." Zdenka Myslikov, Fletcher School predoctoral fellow, will present "Will SMEs Save the Day? Commonalities of Success in Clean Energy Technology Innovation in Latin America." During the last decade, governments of several Latin American countries have strived to build their local clean energy technology innovation ecosystems. These efforts have only had limited success. Nevertheless, some successes stand out. Could these become role models for governments and indigenous companies in the region? This research provides a close look into the energy technology innovation ecosystem in Mexico, Brazil, and Chile, and their local firms that successfully carried out technological innovations in the solar energy industry. It explores the central factors that have contributed to these firms' successes and how their innovation paths have been influenced by the circumstances of "second-best institutions," as defined by the economist Dani Rodrik. The study employs case study analysis, drawing on firm-level cases, to understand the evolution of the strategies that the businesses deploy to succeed in the local energy innovation ecosystem. Initial findings show that successful companies in each of the three countries have several similitudes.
