# EPS Colloquium #### calendar\_today Date and Time **November 15, 2021** 12:00PM - 12:00PM EST #### pin\_drop Location **Zoom & Geological Museum 102 (Haller Hall)** **Steve Wofsy**, Abbott Lawrence Rotch Professor of Atmospheric and Environmental Science at Harvard SEAS, and members of his research group, will present "MethaneSAT and MethaneAIR: Mitigating Methane Emissions From the Oil and Gas Value Chain via Remote Sensing." **Steve Wofsy**, Abbott Lawrence Rotch Professor of Atmospheric and Environmental Science at Harvard SEAS, and members of his research group, will present "MethaneSAT and MethaneAIR: Mitigating Methane Emissions From the Oil and Gas Value Chain via Remote Sensing." Methane emissions have major impacts on atmospheric composition and radiative forcing of climate change. The MethaneSAT satellite, and its companion aircraft instrument (MethaneAIR), are new imaging spectrometers intended to contribute in a major way to reducing these emissions. MethaneSAT provides measurements of regional scale (swath 200 x 200 km) concentration fields with high spatial resolution (pixel size 130 m x 450 m) and precision, from which we derive the underlying emissions. MethaneAIR has a swath width of 4.5 km and pixel size 5 x 25m. The mission is focused on emissions from the oil and gas value chain, with secondary focus on agriculture and landfills. This seminar presents the new science and engineering in the project, including showing for the first time some of the astonishing features seen in our recent airborne flights. We wrap up with new insights informing refinement and updating of the mission strategy and goals for both MethaneSAT and MethaneAIR.
