Abstract: NASA’s InSight mission probed Mars’ inner workings with seismic waves and revealed tantalizing details on the crust, mantle, and molten core of the red planet. But questions remain, and the InSight mission inspires further avenues of deep Mars research: how Mars may have formed across billions of years and how its interior may have offered strong controls on the overall evolution of the geology and habitability of Mars. In this talk, we will constrain the timescale of Martian formation using the Hf–W isotopes and provide interior models of Mars with the size and composition of the Martian core and mantle based on geophysical, geochemical, and seismic evidence. We will then present mineralogical models of the Martian mantle and trace how they may have evolved upon secular cooling. Finally, we will explore Mars' interior as a potential water reservoir, investigating how much water its mantle could store and how it might have been connected to its early hydrosphere.

The event will take place in person and on [Zoom](/%20https://harvard.zoom.us/j/98884783575?pwd=ais5ek9MaGRQYy9ScEh3Zm5YdTRwQT09).
