 As urban populations have exploded across South Asia, trash has become a mounting issue for municipalities. In Delhi, the Ghazipur landfill [made headlines](https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2019/07/06/738965440/a-days-work-on-delhi-s-mountain-of-trash) as it neared the same height as the Taj Mahal. Behind the scenes, a massive, invisible workforce – an entire informal economy – exists around waste, collecting, recycling and subsisting off what others discard.
