"Unexpected Ups & Downs In Emissions Of Ozone-depleting Gases From Eastern China: Lessons For Emission Verification" with Ronald G. Prinn, Professor, MIT.
High Frequency (pollution-event resolving) measurements of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), chloromethanes and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) at stations of the Advanced Global Atmospheric Gases Experiment (AGAGE) over the past decade have enabled detection of substantial increases of these species in air masses originating from specific locations in China. Using inverse methods to combine these measurements with high-resolution 3D Lagrangian Chemical Transport Models driven by observed (re-analysis) meteorology, enables quantitative estimates of the emissions of these species to be made that are sufficient to expose violations of the Montreal Protocol by specific industrial regions in East China. The latest measurements indicate that emissions from these specific regions are now substantially decreasing. Assessments are underway to broaden the global network of AGAGE-type stations to extend these powerful detection capabilities to rapidly industrializing nations in South Asia, South America and elsewhere.
